| Bodywork/Therapeutic
Massage
In
addition to a consistent practice of mindful movement activities, various forms
of bodywork can relieve muscular tension, provide relief from temporary or chronic
muscular discomfort, assist the body in achieving greater flexibility, increase
circulation and stimulate healing from within. When
you consider the benefits of therapeutic massage (some refer to it as "bodywork"),
ranging from "de-kinked" muscles to improved self esteem, it seems less
a luxury and more a part of a preventive health program. To
most of us, it feels good to be touched. Massage communicates a sense of acceptance,
caring and well-being. But it is more than just feeling wonderful, relaxed and
cared for. It is touch applied with focus, knowledge and, frequently, pressure.
The pressure, some researchers say, help reduce the body's levels of stress hormones...and
can stimulate certain sensory receptors that light touch does not. Massage
stimulates both the circulatory and lymphatic systems simultaneously, enhancing
the body's capacity to nourish and detoxify. It can relieve tight muscles, allowing
you to feel as though you had a good stretch--only better. And massage has been
shown to release endorphins, the body's natural painkillers. Since
there are so many styles of massage, we suggest you work with a variety of therapists
to find the right one for you. |
