Practical How to Get the Most from Your Therapeutic Massage
Before the Session Begins
Eat light or put food aside until after your session.
Remove all jewelry.
Bathe or shower.
For shiatu and yoga therapy, wear loose fitting pants and top.
For most styles of massage (those using oils or lotions), remove as much clothing as you are comfortable with. Robes are provided for your use (located in the changing/shower rooms).
At the Beginning of the Session
Tell your therapist why you have chosen this service.
Let your therapist know specific areas of your body that need special care or attention or about any health issues in your life.
During the Session
Breath deeply and evenly.
Deep, rhythmic breathing improves circulation and oxygen flow, allowing energy to move more freely. The resulting expansion in the body's tissues promotes deep relaxation and relief from physical discomfort.

Focus on sensation.
Focusing attention upon bodily sensation encourages the mind to remain present in the moment and to be less distracted by irrelevant thoughts, worries, and plans. With a childlike curiosity, be aware of your body as if you were experiencing it for the first time.

Communicate what you need.
Let your therapist know if the pressure of the touch is too much or too little or anything else you need for comfort during your session (volume of music, heat, light, etc.)
Allow periods of silence.
Silence encourages the mind and body to relax deeply, enhancing your inner experience and allowing self-healing to occur naturally and spontaneously. There will be a brief period of quiet time at the end of your session for you to rest.
After the Session has Ended
You may want to spend time relaxing to integrate the session into your total experience. Additionally, journaling or spending time in nature will promote body-mind integration.
To support you once you have returned home. The Mindful Body carries books, tapes, bodywork tools, and products to help relieve tension, keep your energy flowing freely, and inspire you to live a more relaxed lifestyle.
